So you upgraded to macOS Catalina, and wanted to use ImageCapture in order to import pictures from your iOS Device (iPhone, iPad) into a network drive, and ImageCapture is giving you the error “The operation couldn’t be completed. (com.apple.ImageCaptureCore error -9956.) (-9956).
Good news, I have a fix for you!
– Open System Preferences
– Go to Security & Privacy
– Select Privacy
– Select on the left FULL DISK ACCESS
– In the finder, go under your main hard drive, then
– Go in System
– Go in Library
– Go in Image Capture
– Go in Devices
– Drag and Drop “PTPCamera” into the app list in the previously opened Security & Privacy
– Make sure the check box in front of it is checked
It will warn you that PTPCamera will not have full disk access until it is quit. Click on Quit Now.
This is what you should end up with:
If ImageCapture was opened, quit it.
Unplug your phone. Restart ImageCapture, plug back your phone, and taddaaaa…! Your can now import into your network drive!
Awesome – it worked! Thank you so much.
Thanks so much this worked like a charm!
There is no PTPCamera app in my System/Library/ImageCapture/Devices ? Only three Canon IJScanner apps and one EPSON Scanner app.
Any idea how to solve the issue in this case? Thanks
Hi – PTPCamera stands for Picture Transfer Process. It is a part of the macOS.
What version of macOS do you have? Was it a new install or upgrade? It should definitely be there..
Thanks for the quick reply! I looked in the wrong directory (/Library instead of System/Library) and found it now. Unfortunately adding full disk access to PTPCamera did not solve the problem for me.
Do you still have the same error message ?
Did you reboot maybe?
Finally, it works after I read your message about the wrong directory. It solved now. Thanks.
This doesn’t work.
Try David’s trick in the comments below.
He might have found another work around.
I couldn’t transfer anything until I did this, which worked beautifully for me. the other solutions I had found talked about giving full disk access to ImageCapture, but didn’t talk about PTPCamera, and I sure could not have found that without help.
BTW, ImageCapture used to work flawlessly for me, and I don’t know when this stopped working, i.e. whether it was due to an iOS upgrade or a Mac OS upgrade, but it’s now working with iPhone 6s iOS 13.3.1 and my iMac with macOS Catalina 10.15.3
Thanks a ton for sharing the trick you found here!
I hope it will help others π
THANK YOU SO MUCH – huge relief to find a solution that works…
I have a Nikon Z 7 that I am trying to pair with my computer. It isn’t recognized in the finder, but I was able to get Image Capture to recognize it. However, some of my video files won’t transfer. The smaller ones will transfer, but I have two larger ones that won’t, and the 9956 error message keeps popping up for them. I’m wondering if it is because of the file size. But how am I supposed to get them onto my computer? I’ve tried what you’ve said. Adobe Bridge, DaVinci Resolve, and even Nikon’s Wireless Transmitter Utility won’t work. Just wondering if anyone here knew how to help me.
If you start the CONSOLE in spotlight, you’re going to have a ton of messages.
Any way you can filter the one related to your NIKON, and share it ? Do you have enough space on your HD? Are you transferring directly from the camera, or from the memory card into your Mac ?
Hi Alyssa,
Did you ever find a fix for your z7? I have a z6 and having the exact same issue. works fine for pictures and smaller videos but getting error message when it tries to move 4GB video
you are a genius!
I had been working on it for 3 days without solution.
it works!
Fantastic… I have been struggling to find a solution for this for months now… this is the only solution that actually worked!
I’m glad it helped!
Merci beaucoup French Guy ! It works like a charm.
10000000 merci π
De rien! π
When I look in the devices folder it’s the same as Freidels, 3 Canon and 1 EPSON but no PTPCam. Searched for it by name and looked in any possible other folders but it’s nowhere to be seen which makes me think that’s the reason both iPhoto and image capture says no items. However it keeps saying not responding in activity monitor every time I plug my phone in. Not sure what to doπ©
I just tried with the latest OS X (10.15.4) and actually I don’t see PTPCamera process anymore.
Do you have the same error message at the one specified in the title of this post?
brilliant, thanks!
hi frank… I have tried it, all looks good but the error still there…I transfer a pair of files and then it appears again…that sucks… got and iMac retina from 2017 and iPhone X and not been able to free the space of my iPhone is freaking me out. how could it be with such an expensive thing can’t do such a simple thing?? thanks for your work
hi – I can try to help if you want to do a remote session. For me it worked. So I would need to investigate on your end. Did you install the latest macOS and iOS software on your devices ?
Hello,
I canβt seem to click and drag PTP camera into the app list. Iβve tried adding it through the + symbol, but that doesnβt work either. Any suggestions? πππ
Hi,
You can’t drag it. Unlock the little lock at the bottom of the image so you can have admin right, then add the app through the + sign , and it should work.
I just dragged it, FWIW.
All who are having trouble… start with:
Finder > Go > Go to Folder > enter “/” and pick your way through /System/Library/Image Capture/Devices… (or simply enter that filepath in the field…!). SO you have that Finder window open on one side and System Preferences > S&P > Privacy tab > Full Disk Access (*with the lower left Lock UNLOCKED people!*) and then drag PTPCamera across into the list of Apps in Full Disk Access. Or, you know, the (+) sign (must change the dropdown at the top to “Macintosh HD” or whatever your system HD is!) … whatever works.
**MORE IMPORTANTLY — I kneel at your feet FRENCH GUY!!!**
You’ve lead me on the path to solving my *INITIAL PROBLEM* !!! I was all up in ImageCapture-land (partially because I’m old-school and never really trusted iPhoto) because… I could NOT for the life of me get PHOTOS to write to the Photos.library that I moved to my… NAS! And what do you know… I am now right this minute, having dragged Photos.app into Prefs > S&P > Privacy tab > Full Disk Access, importing the ludicrous amount of photos & videos from my iPhone to… *that very library*!!! Whoop whoop! So thankful!
Also, a few possibly critical observations for the tweakers…
### In your example, mon roi FrenchGuy, you ALSO have Image Capture, _the app_ in the list… so perhaps also adding that will help?
### Aussi, (I am running Cat. 10.15.7), if one then goes, in Privacy, one below the Full Disk Access listing, to “Files and Folders”, _after having added PTPCamera_, one will note that there are specific “dataset” permissions, such as “Desktop” or in my case, under Terminal, I note “Removable Volumes”… gets me wondering if Full DISK Access is essentially “SuperAdmin” with other dataset/categories being sub….
(It’s a bit “I.T. Admin” of me to muse on this, but relevant when it comes to disk access allowed various apps/services in Catalina & undoubtedly future MacOS releases. I FULLY APPLAUD (though convenience-minded people may differ on this) APPLE locking down application access to an “as needed” model — “this is the way”. AND… _for sure_ slightly maddening to have to GIVE ACCESS to a native MacOS app to write to my NAS. And… I TOTALLY GET IT.
Were a black-hat able to game one of these apps or write a hook into it’s libraries… whatever the coding terms here… I would NOT want that app to have full disk, much less, network volume permissions. This could easily result in them pwning… a server, or servers full of data (were that Admin not careful enough to restrict permissions TO that data. I. ahem. DIGRESS.)
High Sierra Mac Version 10.13.6 I can’t drag the PTP camera into the Privacy Section, all there is no folder that says “Full Disk Access” I am hoping you can help. Many thanks
Sorry I just saw this comment. Did you unlock your Privacy settings? (Small lock at the bottom left)
Thank You!! Pulled a few hairs out before I found your solution.
YES, this was one of those crazy annoyances and hard-to-find. It seems to always be the Privacy tab that is breaking all my apps recently. But there’s no way I would have figured out PTPCamera. Sheesh.
Nice work!
Thank you so much!!! err 9956 its ouuukey :]. Important UPLUG the phone, thank you
Thank you! I almost gave up
Amazing, this totally did the trick!!! Thank you so much for this, I canβt tell you how many times this issue has frustrated me to no end! πππ
